How it works
The mechanism, without the marketing
SkinPen is a medical microneedling device that creates controlled micro channels using sterile fine needles. This controlled injury initiates a wound healing response and is often described as collagen induction therapy. Depth and passes should be adjusted to the area, skin and indication rather than using the most aggressive setting possible.
What we assess
The details that change the plan
Active acne, infection, eczema, psoriasis or impaired healing
Scar type, pigmentation tendency and Fitzpatrick skin type
Recent isotretinoin, procedures, anticoagulants and relevant medical history
Whether microneedling alone is sufficient or combination treatment is being considered
Before, during & after
What the appointment may involve
Before, assessment: Skin is prepared and any active inflammation or barrier problem is addressed first. A plan is made around the concern, not simply the device setting.
During, treatment: After cleansing and comfort measures, the sterile cartridge is passed over the treatment area at controlled depths. Pinpoint bleeding may occur at deeper settings.
After, recovery: Redness, warmth, tightness, dryness and mild swelling are expected. Carefully selected post procedure products and sun protection are important while the barrier recovers.
Results, course & recovery
What changes, and when
Collagen remodelling is gradual, so improvement is assessed over weeks and months. A course may be advised for scarring or texture, with sufficient recovery time between sessions. The endpoint is improvement, not the complete disappearance of pores or scars.
Limits, risks & alternatives
The part that should never be hidden
Microneedling cannot treat every scar type, active acne, significant laxity or vascular redness. Risks include infection, prolonged inflammation, post inflammatory pigmentation and scarring if poorly selected or performed. Peels, laser, RF microneedling, subcision, medical acne care or referral may be more appropriate.
