How it works
The mechanism, without the marketing
Cosmelan is a professional depigmentation pathway combining an in clinic mask with a structured home programme. It is used for selected melasma and uneven pigmentation concerns by reducing pathways involved in excess pigment production. The home phase is a major part of the treatment; this is not a one off peel that ends when the mask is removed.
What we assess
The details that change the plan
Type and depth of pigmentation, including melasma triggers
Skin type, inflammation and risk of post inflammatory pigmentation
Pregnancy, medicines, recent procedures and skincare tolerance
Ability to follow homecare, sun protection and review appointments
Before, during & after
What the appointment may involve
Before, assessment: Pigmentation is assessed carefully because brown marks do not all have the same cause. The skin may need preparation and triggering factors are discussed.
During, treatment: The clinic mask is applied for a prescribed period, then removed at home according to individual instructions. The maintenance products begin on a planned schedule.
After, recovery: Redness, tightness, dryness, sensitivity and peeling can be significant. The home programme may need adjustment rather than simply pushing through irritation.
Results, course & recovery
What changes, and when
Improvement is gradual and maintenance matters because melasma and pigment can recur. Progress is assessed with consistent photography and treatment is modified according to tolerance.
Limits, risks & alternatives
The part that should never be hidden
Cosmelan cannot permanently cure melasma or prevent all recurrence. Over treatment and poor sun protection can worsen inflammation and pigmentation. Risks include dermatitis, prolonged redness and pigment change. Other pathways may include medical skincare, superficial peels, carefully selected light or laser treatment, or dermatology input.
