What is SkinPen Medical Microneedling?

What is SkinPen Medical Microneedling?

SkinPen is an FDA approved, medical micro needling device used to create controlled micro-channels in the skin using fine, sterile needles. This process is also known as collagen induction therapy.

The aim is to stimulate the skin’s natural repair response. When the skin experiences controlled micro-injury, it begins a healing process that can support new collagen and elastin formation. These are important proteins involved in firmness, texture and skin resilience.

You may consider SkinPen microneedling if you are concerned about:

Acne scarring
Uneven skin texture
Enlarged pores
Fine lines
Dull or tired-looking skin
Mild crepiness
Loss of smoothness
General skin quality
Early signs of skin ageing

SkinPen is commonly used on the face, and in some cases may be considered for the neck or other areas depending on your skin concern, suitability and the treatment plan.

How does SkinPen Medical Microneedling work

How does SkinPen Medical Microneedling work

SkinPen works by creating thousands of tiny, controlled micro-injuries in the skin. These micro-injuries are deliberate and precise, encouraging the skin to enter a repair and remodelling phase.

During this process, the skin begins to produce new collagen and elastin. Over time, this can help improve the appearance of acne scars, fine lines, skin texture and overall smoothness.

The treatment does not use heat, laser energy or injectable filler. Instead, it relies on your skin’s own healing response. This is why results are usually gradual rather than immediate.

After treatment, your skin may look red or feel warm, similar to a mild sunburn. This usually settles over the following days, although recovery varies depending on treatment depth, skin sensitivity and the area treated.

For concerns such as acne scarring or more visible texture, a course of treatments is often recommended rather than a single session. The exact number of sessions depends on your skin, your goals and how your skin responds.

What SkinPen Medical Microneedling cannot do

What SkinPen Medical Microneedling cannot do

SkinPen medical microneedling can be helpful for skin texture and collagen stimulation, but it is not the right treatment for every concern.

It does not replace lost facial volume. If your main concern is hollowing, flatter cheeks, deeper folds or loss of structure, dermal fillers may be more suitable.

It does not relax facial muscles. If your concern is forehead lines, frown lines or crow’s feet caused mainly by repeated facial movement, anti-wrinkle injections may be more appropriate.

It does not remove all pigmentation or deeper sun damage in one treatment. Pigmentation, melasma, thread veins or significant redness may need a more targeted plan, such as medical-grade skincare, laser, light-based treatments or a combination approach.

It also cannot completely erase acne scars. SkinPen may improve the appearance of acne scarring, but results vary depending on the type, depth and age of the scars, as well as your individual healing response.

Microneedling should also not be treated like a simple facial. It is a controlled skin procedure, and the safety of the treatment depends on correct assessment, appropriate treatment depth, sterile technique and suitable aftercare.

What happens during the consultation?

What happens during the consultation?

Your consultation will begin with understanding what you are hoping to improve. You may feel your skin looks uneven, scarred, congested, dull, rough, enlarged in pore appearance, or less smooth than before.

We will assess your skin type, acne history, scarring pattern, pigmentation risk, sensitivity, active breakouts, skincare routine, previous treatments and medical history. This helps decide whether SkinPen medical microneedling is suitable, or whether another treatment would be safer or more effective.

You will also be asked about pregnancy or breastfeeding, active acne, active infection, cold sores, keloid scarring, recent isotretinoin use, immune conditions, medications, allergies, recent laser or peel treatments, and any history of poor wound healing.

If treatment is suitable, your skin is usually cleansed, prepared and treated with the SkinPen device using a controlled depth appropriate to the area and concern. Some areas may feel more sensitive than others. After treatment, soothing products and aftercare advice are provided.

We will explain how many sessions may be recommended, what result is realistic, what the recovery period may look like, what to avoid afterwards, and when you can return to normal skincare or makeup. Temporary redness, warmth, tightness, dryness, flaking, pinpoint bleeding, swelling or sensitivity can occur after microneedling.
