How it works

The mechanism, without the marketing

Anti wrinkle injections are prescription only medicines used to temporarily reduce the activity of selected facial muscles. They are most relevant when a line is being driven mainly by repeated movement, for example frowning, raising the brows or smiling. They do not resurface the skin, restore lost volume or treat pigmentation. The aim is usually to soften a pattern of movement while preserving a face that still looks and feels like yours.

What the appointment may involve

Before, assessment: Your facial movement is assessed from several angles and the intended change is agreed before any treatment is considered.

During, treatment: Small amounts are placed into carefully selected muscles. A conservative plan is often preferable because more product does not necessarily create a better or more natural result.

After, recovery: Small bumps or redness usually settle quickly. You will receive individual aftercare and advice about when a review is useful.

What changes, and when

The effect is not immediate. It develops over the following days and is usually reviewed only after it has had time to settle. Duration varies with the area treated, dose, muscle strength, metabolism and previous treatment history. Maintenance is optional rather than automatic.

Limits, risks & alternatives

The part that should never be hidden

It cannot lift loose skin, replace lost volume, erase etched lines instantly or improve pores and pigmentation. Possible unwanted effects include bruising, headache, temporary asymmetry and unwanted weakening of a nearby muscle, including eyelid or brow droop. If movement is not the main cause of the concern, skincare, resurfacing, regenerative treatment, filler, or no treatment, may be more appropriate.
