What is Medical Grade LED therapy for Hair?

What is Medical Grade LED therapy for Hair?

Medical-grade LED therapy for hair is a form of light-based scalp treatment.

It uses specific wavelengths of light to support the skin and scalp through a process often called photobiomodulation.

For hair concerns, red and near-infrared light are most commonly discussed because they can interact with cellular processes involved in repair, inflammation control and follicle activity.

You may consider LED hair therapy if you are concerned about:

Early hair thinning
Increased shedding
Reduced hair density
A widening parting
Thinning around the crown
A weaker-looking hairline
Scalp inflammation or sensitivity
Hair that feels finer or less resilient than before

Dermalux Tri-Wave MD is a medical-grade LED phototherapy system and a Class IIa medical device.

How does Medical Grade LED therapy for Hair work

How does Medical Grade LED therapy for Hair work

Medical-grade LED therapy works by exposing the scalp to selected light wavelengths. These wavelengths are absorbed by cells and help support cellular energy, tissue repair, inflammation control and the hair follicle environment.

The treatment itself is comfortable. There are no injections, no needles, no peeling and no downtime in the same way as more invasive scalp treatments. You sit or lie under the LED device while the selected programme is delivered to the scalp.

Results are gradual. Hair grows in cycles, so changes are usually assessed over several months rather than days or weeks. For most people, LED therapy works best as a repeated treatment, either as a standalone supportive option or alongside other hair treatments such as PRP, PRF, polynucleotides, topical treatments or medical hair-loss management where appropriate.

Slow hair growth

Chronic inflammation reduced through near-infrared light's anti-inflammatory properties

Scalp inflammation

Inadequate blood flow improved to deliver oxygen and nutrients to follicles

Poor scalp circulation

Genetic hair loss patterns improved through cellular energization and DHT reduction

What Medical Grade LED therapy for Hair cannot do

What Medical Grade LED therapy for Hair cannot do

Medical-grade LED therapy can be useful as part of a hair and scalp support plan, but it is not suitable for every type of hair loss.

It cannot guarantee hair regrowth. Some people respond well, some respond modestly, and some may not respond.

It cannot revive follicles that are no longer active. If an area has been completely bald for a long time, or the follicles have significantly miniaturised, LED therapy is less likely to create meaningful improvement.

It cannot replace a hair transplant where surgical restoration is needed. If hair loss is advanced, transplant surgery or medical hair-loss treatment may be more appropriate.

It cannot treat every cause of shedding. Hair loss can be linked to iron deficiency, thyroid disease, low vitamin D, stress, illness, medication, hormonal changes, autoimmune conditions, scalp inflammation, traction, postpartum changes or nutritional deficiency.

It also should not replace medical assessment if your hair loss is sudden, patchy, painful, associated with redness or scaling, or rapidly worsening.

The best results are usually seen when treatment is started early, when follicles are still active, and when the underlying cause of hair thinning has been properly assessed.

What happens during the consultation?

What happens during the consultation?

Your consultation will begin with understanding your pattern of hair loss. You may be asked when the shedding started, whether it was sudden or gradual, whether the parting has widened, whether the crown or hairline has changed, and whether there is a family history of hair thinning.

We will assess your scalp, hair density, hairline, crown, shedding pattern and any signs of inflammation, scaling, redness, tenderness or scarring. This helps decide whether medical-grade LED hair therapy is suitable, or whether further investigation is needed first.

You will also be asked about your medical history, medications, recent illness, stress, diet, pregnancy or postpartum changes, menopause, thyroid disease, anaemia, autoimmune conditions, previous hair treatments and any light sensitivity.

Blood tests may be recommended if the cause of hair loss is unclear. These may include full blood count, ferritin or iron studies, thyroid function, vitamin D, B12, folate and other tests where clinically appropriate.

If LED therapy is suitable, the scalp is positioned under the device and the chosen light programme is delivered. Treatment is usually comfortable and non-invasive. The consultation will also explain how many sessions may be recommended, when progress should be reviewed, whether combination treatment may be useful, and what kind of improvement is realistic.
