Understanding your Unwanted Hair

Understanding your Unwanted Hair

Unwanted hair can appear on many areas of the face and body, including the upper lip, chin, underarms, bikini area, legs, arms, chest, back or abdomen. For some people, it is mainly a cosmetic concern. For others, it may be linked to irritation, razor bumps, ingrown hairs, skin darkening or repeated inflammation.

Hair growth can be influenced by genetics, hormones, ethnicity, medication, age and medical conditions such as Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome. Some people naturally have thicker or darker hair, while others notice new or increased hair growth over time.

Laser hair removal works best on hair that contains pigment.

What are Unwanted hair treatments?

What are Unwanted hair treatments?

Unwanted hair treatments are designed to reduce or manage hair growth in areas where you would prefer smoother skin. Traditional methods such as shaving, waxing, threading and plucking can be useful, but they usually need to be repeated frequently and may cause irritation for some people.

Laser hair removal is a longer-term option. It uses focused light energy to target hair follicles during the active growth phase, gradually reducing the amount and thickness of hair in the treated area.

You may consider laser hair removal if you are concerned about:

Repeated shaving or waxing
Ingrown hairs
Razor bumps or shaving rash
Dark, coarse or stubborn hair
Facial hair on the upper lip, chin or jawline
Body hair on the underarms, legs, arms, bikini line, chest or back
Skin irritation from hair removal methods
Wanting longer-term hair reduction rather than constant maintenance

Cutera Excel HR provides advanced hair removal solutions for every skin type using a dual-wavelength system

How Unwanted hair treatments work?

How Unwanted hair treatments work?

Laser hair removal works by directing light energy into the hair follicle. The pigment in the hair absorbs the laser energy, which is converted into heat. This damages the follicle structures involved in future hair growth and gradually slows or reduces regrowth.

Hair grows in cycles, and not every hair is in the active growth phase at the same time. This is why a course of sessions is needed. Each treatment targets a proportion of hairs that are active at that point.

The Cutera Excel HR combines a 755 nm Alexandrite laser with a 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser and sapphire contact cooling.

Different wavelengths are useful because different skin tones and hair types need different settings. Alexandrite laser is useful for dark hair on fair skin, while long-pulsed Nd:YAG can be used on darker skin and is most effective on coarse, dark hair.

Results are gradual. Most people need a course of treatments, followed by occasional maintenance depending on their hair growth, hormones, treatment area and response.

What happens during the consultation?

What happens during the consultation?

Your consultation will begin with understanding the area you would like treated, your skin tone, hair colour, hair thickness, previous hair removal methods and any history of irritation, ingrown hairs or pigmentation.

We will assess whether the hair is suitable for laser treatment. Dark, coarse hair usually responds best.

You will also be asked about tanning, sun exposure, fake tan, medications, pregnancy or breastfeeding, medical conditions, hormonal concerns, PMOS, previous laser treatments, skin sensitivity, history of keloid scarring, cold sores for facial areas, and any previous burns or pigmentation changes.

A patch test is usually recommended before a full treatment course.

Before treatment, you will usually be advised to shave the area and avoid waxing, plucking or bleaching, because the follicle needs to remain present for the laser to target.

During treatment, protective eyewear is worn and the laser is passed over the treatment area. The sensation is often described as a brief hot snap or sting, and cooling is used to help protect the skin and improve comfort. After treatment, temporary redness, warmth or mild swelling around the follicles can occur.

The consultation will help you understand whether laser hair removal is suitable for your skin and hair, how many sessions may be needed, what preparation is required, and what kind of reduction is realistic.
